What is Workplace Wellbeing?

Employee wellbeing, also often referred to under the heading of workplace wellbeing is fundamental to creating healthy, productive organisations. Neglecting employee wellbeing increases organisational risks and can negatively affect business performance employee wellbeing is neglected, businesses fail.

According to Jan-Emmanuel De Neve and George Ward in their research paper at the University of oxford research centre “Workplace wellbeing is how we feel at work and about our work.”

They go on to explain that workplace wellbeing has three core dimensions:

  • Meaning and purpose (whether work feels worthwhile and significant)
  • Job satisfaction (how people evaluate their job)
  • Emotional experience at work (how they feel while working)

It encompasses the day‑to‑day experience of working life, the conditions people operate within, and the extent to which they feel able to function well, stay healthy, and contribute meaningfully.

Why I Do This Work

I love helping people to help themselves. With 25 years of joyful and purposeful experience of helping people to create change, I am deeply committed to helping people have a more positive experience of work. Not only that, given a person spends on average around 90,000 hours at work during their lifetime, I believe those hours could be spent with greater purpose, fulfilment, and contentment. Wellbeing should be part of every persons everyday working life, not an occasional initiative or a short‑term intervention.

My consultancy work supports organisations to build and maintain healthier habits, strengthen culture, and create environments where people can perform well without sacrificing their mental health and wellbeing. The aim is to help employees feel valued, connected, and able to thrive in their roles.

The Wellbeing Landscape

Employee wellbeing has shifted from being “nice to have” to a core part of organisational strategy. Recent UK research highlights the scale of the challenge:

  • 90% of adults report high or extreme stress
  • Mental health drives 41% of long‑term workplace absences
  • Mental health‑related absence costs UK employers an estimated £56 billion annually
  • 88% of workers view wellbeing support as equally important as salary

Despite this, many organisations — regardless of size — struggle to prioritise wellbeing in a meaningful way. Smaller organisations often face resource constraints, while larger organisations who have purchased wellbeing initiatives, can find it difficult to embed wellbeing strategies consistently across teams.

Common barriers include:

  • Limited financial or HR resources
  • Time pressures
  • Competing priorities
  • Lack of dedicated wellbeing expertise
  • Uncertainty about where to start
  • Reliance on short‑term or reactive initiatives
  • Uncertainty on how to influence leaders
  • Difficulty measuring ROI

To cut through these barriers, sustainable wellbeing and high productivity requires a more structured, preventative, and organisation‑wide approach. This is where I come in.

How I Support Organisations

Creating a healthier workplace isn’t just about introducing isolated wellbeing initiatives. It starts with understanding your organisation, aligning wellbeing with your business objectives, and building a strategy that delivers meaningful, measurable results.

Every organisation’s journey is different. My role is to guide you through an evidence-informed process that helps to uncover what’s needed, align wellbeing with your organisational priorities, and identify the most appropriate next steps. Depending on your context, this may involve developing a strategy, strengthening leadership capability, reviewing existing approaches, or supporting implementation and evaluation.

The Five-Step Pathway to Workplace Wellbeing

1. Discover

Every organisation is unique. We begin by getting a snapshot of where things are, exploring your workplace wellbeing landscape through data, employee feedback and conversations with key stakeholders. Together, we uncover what’s working well, where the challenges lie, and the factors influencing both employee wellbeing and organisational performance.

2. Align

With a clear understanding of your current position, we work together to pinpoint your organisational priorities, values and strategic goals. We look at how to align these with your workplace wellbeing aspirations. This enables you to create a shared understanding of where wellbeing can have the greatest impact.

3. Shape

Using the insights we’ve gathered, I assist you to determine the most appropriate direction for your organisation. Whether refining what’s already in place or developing something completely new, the focus is on creating a practical, evidence-informed approach that reflects your unique context.

4. Activate

Turning ideas into action takes commitment and collaboration. Working alongside your decision makers, leaders and teams, I provide thought-partnership, challenge and support needed to enable you to build the confidence, capability and momentum to embed workplace wellbeing into leadership, culture and everyday ways of working.

5. Evolve

Workplace wellbeing is an ongoing journey. Together, we capture and review impact and progress, reflecting on what you’ve learned. We celebrate successes while also exploring whether, and how, you might refine and adjust your approach, as your organisation, your people and your priorities continue to evolve.
